Once when I posed this inquiry in a teleclass, a man said I'd date a supermodel. I love his trustworthiness! This is what I would do: Call Oprah and disclose to her I should be on her show! Or on the other hand I'd tryout to be a reinforcement artist in Tina Turner's band when she goes on visit once more (I love to move). Have you at any point pondered what you would do on the off chance that you basically trusted you could? Why not make a rundown at the present time? Remove the possibility of disappointment and let your creative mind go out of control! Resume Writing Tip - Being Rude Does Not Help Your Career
Resume Writing Tip - Being Rude Does Not Help Your CareerIt is widely acknowledged that the best resume writing tip that can be given to potential applicants is to always be polite, according to the extent to which they are represented in the resume. Many job seekers are made to feel that it is necessary to be as rude as possible if they want to land a job interview. The truth is that being rude does not help you get a job interview. In fact, it is the opposite. If you are rude to a job applicant, they are likely to doubt your skills and abilities and may choose to hire someone who can be more courteous in that particular position. Many job seekers have been so convinced by what they have heard that they have not taken the time to really understand the disadvantages of being rude in their resume. You see, there are many potential applicants who are probably already running around with fake resumes that are trying to cover up the fact that they are actually rude and unwelcoming. Your ca reer can suffer because of this in many cases.A professional resume writer can come in and create a resume that would be perfectly acceptable to employers without making you look rude or unprofessional. The idea is to write your resume in such a way that it helps you land the job without having to act rudely or untruthfully. This is especially true if the interviewer knows you are not particularly experienced or skilled in your chosen field.Of course, your friend would never try to enter a position like yours or with the knowledge needed for the job. You have to show that you have expertise and knowledge about your field before an employer will even consider hiring you.The problem is that some of us who have a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, or even a PhD are not considered fit to take a job interview. Most of us may not know anything about the job we are applying for, so there may be plenty of candidates who have more experience than we do.When I first got out of college, I d id not know anything about my career path or the career I was interested in. I just wanted to find a way to make money for the money I needed, but there were no opportunities in the field I was interested in. In order to land a job in my chosen field, I had to fake it for quite some time. When I finally found the job that I was truly interested in, I looked at all the requirements for the career and tried to match it up with the credentials I had. Of course, I did not want to have faked all of the experience because I did not really have much in the field. Instead, I researched the career so that I could show the employer that I was not just an inexperienced person with no training, but someone who really knew my career field and was able to earn a Master's degree or higher within it.

Tips for finding a STEM job
Tips for finding a STEM job If your child is a whiz in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM), youâve got yourself a fallback retirement plan. But what if YOUâRE looking for that STEM job? The so-called STEM fields are in high demand and that trend only promises to intensify moving forward. STEM workers earn 81 percent more than the national average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics(BLS), and STEM jobs are expected to grow considerably faster than non-STEM jobs through 2022. This topic was recently the subject of a report by the personal finance website WalletHub, which identified 2016âs best and worst cities for STEM professionals. To learn more about the reportâs findings, particularly how job seekers can use the information to land the best job possible, I spoke to WalletHubâs senior editor John Kiernan. Here are his tips: 1. Remember, its not Silicon Valley or bust For many people, Silicon Valley is synonymous with technology. After all, itâs where Apple, Alphabet (Googleâs parent) and numerous other notable tech companies were born and still call home. And it boasts a solid supply of talent, thanks to the conveniently located Stanford University. But while Silicon Valley is certainly the epicenter of the tech world, at the end of the day itâs still just a small part of that world. âYes, the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara metro area, where Silicon Valley is, ranked first in our report,â Kiernan said. âBut some really great areas followed very closely behind, and your particular set of skills may play better outside the uber-competitive Valley.â The runners-up, in order, include the Austin, Seattle, Denver, Minneapolis and Boston metro areas. The San Francisco, San Diego, Atlanta, Charlotte and Nashville metro areas are all in the top 25, too. Plus, Houston (8 th overall) has the highest median salary, $76,056, while Detroit (35 th) has the highest annual salary growth, 4.11 percent. 2. Donât forget about housing Housing accounts for one-third of the average personâs annual expenses, according to BLS data. That means housing costs should be top of mind when youâre considering where to live and work.Winston-Salem, North Carolina (47 thoverall), and Scranton-Wilkes-Barre-Hazelton, Pennsylvania (66 th), boast the most affordable housing, according to WalletHubâs findings. On the other hand, San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California metro area (1 stoverall), Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, California (96 th), and urban Honolulu, Hawaii (95 th), have the most expensive housing. 3. STEM and telework go hand in hand â In this day and age, you and your employer donât have to reside in the same city,â Kiernan said. âPlenty of jobs are telework-friendly, especially in the technologically progressive STEM fields.â This not only expands your options during the application phase, it also enables you to choose a low-cost place to live in order to maximize your paycheck and spend more time at home. 4. Start a bidding war One of the reasons that STEM professionals earn nearly twice as much as the average person is that there arenât enough qualified people to fill all of the related jobs. In fact, U.S. colleges and universities need to produce 34 percent more STEM graduates annually just to keep up with the demand, according to the Presidentâs Council on Science and Technology. Your services are therefore in short supply, especially if your specialty issoftware development. âUse that to your advantage,â Kiernan said. âEnter every interview knowing the going rate for that position, and donât be quick to take the first offer you receive. Unless youâre dealing with one of just a few tech titans, you have both the upper hand and the luxury of patience.â 5. Contemplate your idea work-life balance High salaries often are accompanied by high expectations and considerable demands on your time. Itâs not a coincidence that the major cities in the top three metro areas for STEM professionals rank 27th, 22nd and 32nd among the best cities for families, according to another WalletHub report. âYou need to ask yourself what your free time is really worth before signing on the dotted line,â Kiernan said. At the end of the day, STEM professionals are well positioned for success no matter where they decide to live. Maybe space camp and all those video games will pay off after all!

Zen the Art of Forgetting Your Lines - When I Grow Up
Zen the Art of Forgetting Your Lines - When I Grow Up Pic taken from the Flickr feed of Nate Cooper I was distant from everyone else, focal point of the audience in the voyage ships theater, going to open my mouth to begin the tune that denotes the finish of the journey. I dont recall the tune now, yet I know there was a ton of schmaltz and step-contacting. Directly before I went on, an artist asked me when she should enter. I experienced the male vocalists refrain, which comes after mine, to give her sign line. I understood my misstep when I hit my imprint a moment or two later. His section was latched onto my subconscious mind, and I couldnt recollect my own for the life of me. Rather than singing his refrain, or moving my lips and imagining the mic went out, I just stood theresmiling. The male artist came out when he should, and he congratulated me reassuringly. I was stunned, thisclose to running off the stage. That living bad dream has made me question my preparation and my abilities as an entertainer, being so certain I couldnt hold lines and verses and move moves, throughout the previous 11 years. Its made me uncertain as a speaker, empowering me to compose my whole discourse on file cards and grasping them while I gave my discussion. Most speakers, in the event that they have sign cards, just have expressions or thoughts recorded to help direct them starting with one point then onto the next. I didnt might I venture to had each line verbatim on those cards. Look at my Etsy Success Symposium talk as confirmation. I couldnt carry anything up with me at the World Domination Summit yet I rehearsed my brief melody for likely near 5 hours. At the point when I chose to put on a one-lady show a not many weeks back following a multi year rest from performing, I quickly began being on edge around a certain something: recollecting the damn thing. It didnt help that it was the first occasion when I was going to play an instrument before a group of people since the last piano presentation I gave in 1994ish. (I played piano for around 8 years and would never figure out how to retain a solitary piece.) I reached an educator 3 months before the show and planned 2-3 exercises every month, needing assistance with learning my tunes. Fortunately, I discovered Bryan Wade, who showed me how to retain my music (by making cheat sheets), how to heat up (by breathing profoundly and playing gradually), and how to get once again into my body on the off chance that I feel Im going to go up on my lines. Out of nowhere, rather than concentrating on where I wrecked in practice.instead of recollecting that one time in front of an audience where I just blanked out completelyinstead of fanatically going over each word, each harmony, each progression in each waking second I chose to acknowledge the way that I accomplished the work. I knew the show. My experience, ability, preparing and readiness would take me during that time of the show with euphoria and that unnerving/energizing inclination I love. The time had come to inhale profound, remain concentrated basically on being available, slow down, and offer up my abundance to the lords of the theater. In view of the title of the post, you can envision what occurred. In the third tune, I overlooked my lines. I could depict how it occurred, yet I should simply demonstrate it to you. Ive never felt so Zen about going up on my lines. Ive never would not conceal botches however, rather, let it be known for all to hear and request help. Ive never felt so upheld in front of an audience like I was spending time with the crowd rather than performing for them. At the point when the show was finished, I didnt apologize for it. I didnt beat myself up over it. I was straightforward when I was asked whether it was organized, and accepting it as a commendation that some crowd individuals thought it should occur. after 10 days, I talked at Reboot. Just because, I not just didnt utilize my content I surrendered any kind of signal cards other than the PowerPoint I arranged. I revealed to myself that the crowd was my ally, that were all hanging out together, and it support me. I was distracted, however, by the way that the lights were on and I could see countenances and responses unmistakably. I took a gander at my kindred speakers in the first line truly cultivated people who so dazzled me as they listened eagerly to what I was sayingand I overlooked where I was in my discussion. I felt less agreeable up there, progressively terrified however it didnt dominate. I had been here previously, and it wasnt the apocalypse. Rather, I uninhibitedly conceded that I lost my place and disclosed to them why, something along the lines of, You folks are so overall quite mindful that Im taking a gander at all of you to an extreme and I completely overlooked what I was going to state. I gave myself a second, cheated by propelling the slide, and went on my way. Not a solitary individual referenced it after the discussion. Rather, they mentioned to me what stuck, related my story to theirs, revealed to me how cool it was that I played the uke during my discussion. Following 11 years, I'm not permitting that one occurrence to lead my convictions. Im getting once again into my body, easing back down and taking as much time as is needed, claiming my preparation and experience all in all, recalling that everybody is my team promoter, and giving myself authorization for being flawed wherever I go. Did this long story impact you? What might you be able to adopt a more zen strategy with? Any negative experience you've had that you're at long last prepared to relinquish? I wanna find out about it in the remarks! Also, did I notice I completely reserved 3 more execution dates in NYC this winter? Cause I completely did.

Managing Your Accountancy Career
Managing Your Accountancy Career Managing Your Accountancy Career 28 Mar 2020 Paul Buchan When I first meet newly-qualified accountants I always ask them what their career aspirations are. Invariably, they all share a similar goal of becoming a Financial Director or Head of Finance. Many people will go on to have very successful careers and the fundamental factor for achieving their goals is to manage their career effectively. Whilst intelligence, personal attributes, commercial ability and the ability to create innovative strategies are key, crafting a career management strategy helps give your career direction and outlines the steps on how you will get to where you want to. Evaluate your current role It's usually unwise to leave a job until you have exhausted all possible opportunities in your current role. Larger companies typically offer a wide choice of career progression opportunities. To stand out, analyse business issues that need addressed and come up with a proposal to tackle them. The people who actively seek out new opportunities internally usually strike a very positive note when it comes to promotions and internal appointments. If you work for a start-up, or a small business, a promotion may not be immediately available to you. In this situation, attempt to design your own role - what would it consist of and what would be your responsibilities? Then determine if you can marry your role with your current employer. Who would you need to speak to make it happen? Ultimately there are only three reasons you should ever look to join a new company: You have tried all possible angles to improve and advance in your current role You are presented with an opportunity that is simply far too good to refuse Your job makes you unhappy (and it can't be resolved by step one) Assess your skills If you've decided to move on from your current role, you should first of all assess your current skill-set against your peer group and the level of new position you are targeting. Are there gaps in your knowledge? Would these be better filled with a sideways move into a role that challenges different aspects of your skillset? The key to this decision is how confident you are that in the event of open competition; are you likely to be a stand-out candidate? If the answer is no, perhaps you would benefit from a sideways move. For example, if you are a technically strong accountant but with limited or no project management experience, you should consider a change management role, a CAPEX accounting role, or something similar that lends itself to business improvement from a reporting and strategy point of view. If you are a qualified external auditor and you want to get into a management accounting role, you may be better to look at moving into an internal audit role - getting to know the business and see where this takes you. There are various routes you can take in order to plug gaps in your knowledge and skills. Make sure you are clear in the route map you have set out within your career management strategy. Is it time to climb the ladder? If you have the right skills and experience to move up the ladder, set out how you are going to achieve this. Set parameters; what would be the minimum salary and package you would accept in a career advancement role? Understand your worth and keep your expectations realistic, otherwise you could anchor yourself from moving forward. Start your job search Whether you are using offline or online media, make sure you are strategic in your job search. Read the advert thoroughly and determine whether it is the right role for you; do you have the right skills and experience to take on the role? Don't apply blindly. List your skills and experience and be selective in the roles you apply for. Select roles and companies you are genuinely interested in and feel well suited for. Look beyond the job board Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Whilst job boards are a good source for finding opportunities, using social media and networking with other professionals are great ways of expanding your network of contacts. Twitter is a fantastic tool to find out more about companies and learn more about their employer brand. If a company catches your interest it should be added to your list of businesses to target. LinkedIn can widen your network and make you discoverable to many businesses and employers. Make sure to optimise your profile to ensure you are findable. Register with a reputable recruitment business Align yourself with a reputable recruitment firm and register your CV with them. In order to develop strong relationships you should associate yourself with no more than four recruitment businesses, particularly if you want to move forward in your career management strategy. It's important to choose the right recruiter. How can you make sure they have the right people on board to help you? It all comes down to research. Businesses that align themselves with industry bodies such as ICAS, CIMA and ACCA are a good starting point, as are recommendations from colleagues and peers. Network, network, network Many roles are so under the radar that you will only find out about them through word of mouth. Attend industry events and seminars and talk to people. This doesn't only increase your professional brand, but also puts you in a position to hear about new roles that are available. Got an interview offer? Evaluate the fit Been offered an interview? Consider the organisation and the role. Does this take your career in the direction that you've outlined in your career strategy? Don't be afraid to turn down interviews if you feel there isn't a match. It's better to pull out at the interview stage rather than waiting until you've received an offer. Making the wrong career move has the potential to have dire consequences for your career management strategy - you have the right to be selective. Conclusions A career move can be a daunting prospect at every level; whether you're newly qualified and starting your first role, or experienced and leaving a company you've spent several years with. Make sure your career move is for the right reasons and beneficial to your career management strategy. However, the prospect of setting a career management strategy may seem daunting and you may not know where to start. That's where we can help - get in touch today to speak to one of our experts.

The Business Benefits of Employee Health Assessment
The Business Benefits of Employee Health Assessment Itâs a fact; people are a companyâs most important asset. So, it follows that the healthier your employees are, the healthier your business will be as a result. Looking after the health and wellbeing of employees is not (yet) a legal requirement in the UK, but as noted by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), it should be a central priority for any business. However, to maximise investment in employee wellbeing, organisations need to be equipped with the right information and the right services to build an accurate picture of the health of the workforce and put in place actionable measures to improve it. Hereâs why health assessments are an important tool for employers wanting to create a successful wellbeing strategy with a meaningful ROI⦠Workplace productivity A supporting Deloitte study to the 2017 Thriving at Work review found presenteeism, sickness absence and staff turnover costs UK employers £33-42 billion annually in productivity losses. How to boost workplace productivity is an age-old question. Remote working, collaboration, clear communication, and training are all widely acknowledged as ways businesses can do this. However, understanding the health risks which exist in a workforce and having the foresight to act before problems arise can deliver significant productivity gains. Most corporate health assessments focus on both lifestyle and medical factors. Dependent on the provider, assessments include health dashboards, biometric screening, blood analysis, and one-on-one sessions with physiologists, doctors, and coaches to drill down into the current (and indeed future) health factors affecting individual employees and the workforce as a whole. Equipped with this knowledge, employers can support employees in starting personalized health journeys and reap the rewards of reduced absenteeism and PMI spend, boosted morale and higher productivity rates. Stand out from the crowd Health assessments donât just bring productivity benefits, they can also underline a businessesâ position as an attractive place to work. Today, hiring the best talent is a competitive field, with more applicants looking beyond salary. So much so, according to CIPD, 97 percent of businesses are planning to maintain or increase their benefit spend in the next two years. No longer a ânice to haveâ, a strong employee wellness offering which caters to the individual could be the deciding factor for applicants. There are also benefits for businesses offering health assessments to existing staff. As much as hiring the best talent is a challenge, so too is retaining it. The new reality of employee loyalty means people today are less likely to have a âjob for lifeâ. In fact, half of Millennials are planning to leave a job within two years according to a recent Deloitte survey. Staff turnover can be costly in terms of productivity, reputation and staff morale. Therefore, job culture and benefits are set to become an even bigger focus for employers looking to show they care about the wellbeing of their staff. Encouraging self-care Achieving and maintaining good mental and physical health can be challenging for employees, particularly during busy times at work. This is where health assessments can help. By giving employees an awareness of their own health and risk factors, theyâre empowered to take control and change their behavior, preventing ill health in the long-term and improving quality of life. However, itâs important employers bear in mind there may be barriers stopping some employees from participating. For example, among Nuffield Healthâs clients, employees in manual roles such as factory work find it more difficult than office workers to justify taking time away to attend a health assessment, particularly if it will impact their earnings. Others may be too embarrassed or scared of the potential consequences to discuss their wellbeing with someone other than their close family or friends. Simply offering health assessments isnât job done. Making sure employees understand what theyâre entitled to, how it could benefit them both professionally and personally, how their information will be used, and what reasonable adjustments are possible to help them attend should be top priorities. Leveraging data insights Data is everywhere and over the next decade, itâs predicted the amount of data created is set to double every two years, inundating organizations with new, insight-rich information. But, while there are clear business benefits, without intelligent analysis data is essentially worthless. Data is transforming the way corporate health assessments are delivered and the value they bring. If youâre looking to make specific and measurable interventions across an employee population and maximize ROI from your wellbeing budget, data can help you move away from a one-size-fits-all approach. The next generation of health assessments, which weâre only on the cusp of understanding, are leveraging artificial intelligence to produce an incredibly accurate picture of what makes employees tick, what they should do more of and what they should stop. They can also predict future health risks. For example, Nuffield Health recently launched PATH (Personalised Assessment for Tailored Health), a differentiated health assessment journey enabling employees to understand and improve their health anywhere, anytime and on any device. First, people log on to PATH and tell it about themselves; their age, medical history, and lifestyle behaviors to give an overview of their health and wellbeing. Then, by answering more detailed questions, a personâs risk and contributing factors are determined by Trium, a powerful, evidence-based clinical algorithm. Using this information, PATH then recommends personalized face-to-face health assessments with clinical experts. For any business using technology to collect personal health data, privacy should be a top priority as itâs considered sensitive and is subject to strict rules. All responsible providers working with employers will always de-identify data, meaning individuals cannot be identified. âRawâ health data will only be processed by health professionals who are bound by the obligation of medical secrecy and discussed one-on-one with individual employees. Meaningful ROI So, while a one-off health assessment is beneficial to the individual, the collective data obtained by employers can help inform a more meaningful and intelligent wellbeing workplace strategy. Ultimately, a person will not instinctively know their blood pressure, biochemistry or resilience to stress even if they are at risk of developing lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, diabetes or cancer. Organizations offering health assessments as part of their wellbeing strategy are giving individuals the opportunity to gain insight and awareness. This knowledge alone could be enough to elicit a positive behavior change resulting in improved health outcomes, tangible business benefits, and of course a more meaningful ROI. Using Professional Resume Writing and Design
Using Professional Resume Writing and DesignThere are many types of content that can be included in the resume but not all of them will be desirable. Some content is necessary but not appropriate to include because it could lead to the omission of the more important content on the resume. Others are all too easy to overlook because they don't qualify as unnecessary. One of the biggest mistakes that employers make when writing and designing the resume is that they write and design the resume to highlight a particular career objective. That is not necessarily the best way to go about this. A better approach would be to write and design the resume to emphasize the advantages of working with an employer. This will make it much easier for the applicant to get an interview and actually land the job.Of course, it is also imperative to include specific information about the skills that an applicant has acquired while in school or while in college. However, a resume should not contain too much information. A resume that contains too much information will make it difficult for the interviewer to evaluate the applicant's worthiness for the position.Professional resume writers and design companies know that your resume is going to be read by thousands of people over the course of the next few weeks. They want to make sure that you put every single thing you know about yourself on your resume. The same goes for any other type of document you may send out for evaluation purposes. It is also vital that the resume has all of the specific information. These days, most employers want to see a few key pieces of information. For example, they will want to see the job title that you hold, the number of years that you have been employed, the position that you held in your last position, and the years that you have been employed at each company. Employers are also looking for a list of any awards or recognitions that you may have received. If you are looking to get your resume reviewed before sending it out for consideration, you should write and design the resume yourself. You can usually get a list of sample resumes from the resume service that you are using. Many times you can also find samples online and you will be able to get an idea of how the professionals are writing and designing the resume for you.The first step in writing and designing the resume is to make sure that you understand the main elements that you need to include. At this point, the resume is simply a representation of your entire resume. This means that you should make sure that the resume includes your job history, education, any awards or recognitions that you may have received, and the job titles at which you have held the positions that you are applying for. You should then include all of the information about your skills and education and then list the responsibilities for each position. It is also important to address any critical points that you want to make on your resume. For examp le, you might want to include something like a statement that you have earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, but you did not receive credit for this degree from an accredited college or university. However, you did receive an associate's degree and you will submit the information on your resume as soon as possible.

Can We Improve Our Decisions and Control Our Future - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Can We Improve Our Decisions and Control Our Future - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Wouldnt it be great if you could predict your future and make all the right choices? Better decisions would ultimately make you happy later and make your life much more trouble-free. Research in behavioral economics shows that most people make choices about how they imagine events will be. These decisions are based on our perspective of how we feel today and studies show that this is ultimately a grave error. One cannot know how he will feel in the future. We are left superimposing current emotions on our perception of future events. These dynamics have profound implications for employers as well as for employees and the happiness and satisfaction one derives from work. In Daniel Gilbertâs best-seller, Stumbling on Happiness, Gilbert explores the nature of happiness and he explains psychological illusions that tend to distort our perception of the future. He states, that humans are the only creatures capable of imagination. Although daydreaming about the future is enjoyable, Gilbert provides research that people daydream on a regular basis with a tendency to focus about good things which will happen. People tend to overestimate the likelihood of positive outcomes and have an overly optimistic view about the future. In the workplace, this plays out when a relative or a friend of an influential co-worker interviews and skews judgement more favorably than the candidate deserves. Conversely, it also results in an employee choosing a company based media hype rather than factual information about that firm and its managements success. Gilbert explains that our brains hope to gain some control over outcomes with this prediction bias. This desire to exert control over the future is a fundamental need as people search both consciously and unconsciously for well-being. Gilbert offers a thorough and at times humorous explanation of the limits of the human imagination in predicting future happiness. These limits are characterized as realism, presentism, and rationalization. In describing realism, Gilbert summarizes his recent research on memory and perception. The brain constructs memories which tend to fill in details that may or may not have actually occurred. Gilbert simplifies the brains operating system into the following groups: Realism The subjective process in that what is perceived and remembered is what the mind wants to see and remember. The end result is a false recollection or skewed picture, lacking in details. We fill in what we canât see in our blind spot of visual perception with what we think should be there. Weâre not even aware of the process as the brain quickly fills in the details from our memory of what weâve seen thatâs similar in our past. Presentism Describes the overriding mental tendency to remember the past or predict the future based on present events, circumstances, and feelings. Gilbert shows that we imagine events that are nearer in time because we value time that is closest to our present greater that we value the far future. Rationalization The tendency to view events differently after they have occurred, with a positive spin. Gilbert points out that inescapable, inevitable and irrevocable circumstances trigger the psychological immune system. Explanations lessen the impact of unpleasant events. This might explain why itâs often hard for people to be accountable for their flaws and learn from their mistakes. The natural tendency is to create a story that explains why we did what we did versus introspecting about what went wrong and how to fix the problem and prevent it from reoccurring. Take Away Points From Stumbling on Happiness Gilbertâs research poses some interesting points to consider for both management and for employees. The imagination has three major shortcomings that lead us to making poor predictions and choices for our future: We use it to fill in the blanks and leave out data It projects the present onto the future It fails to recognize that things look different once they happen than how we think theyâll look. Gilberts Stumbling on Happiness helps us to understand how to avoid guessing and imagining the future. He suggests that we base our assessment of what the best avenue will be based on other peopleâs actual experience. Dont just pick any mentor or role model. Carefully seek out and request mentorship from someone who has a similar personality, skills, background and goals to yours and ask them how they feel about their current role. Its worth making the extra effort to find a mentor/role model within the industry and in a firm that interests you and request an informational interview to learn more about the ups and downs, the perks and the tradeoffs there so you can make a realistic choice about whether or not that job and that lifestyle would be a good fit. Either way, donât stumble on your happiness. Take charge by finding someone whoâs actually been there before you to offer you guidance.

How To Make Your Dream Employer Notice You
How To Make Your Dream Employer Notice You Standing out from the crowd is not always easy, especially if academically youâre pretty average. There is always a plethora of younger, brainier, prize-winning âcream of the cropâ types vying for the best jobs so why would an employer notice your application? Hereâs some top-tips to help get your application considered⦠1) Get online: When did you last Google yourself or try to find your profile on Linkedin? If youâre seriously hunting for a job you should be regularly checking and maintaining your online persona. It should be complete, relevant and consistent between platforms. You wouldnât send a recruiter a half finished resume, so make sure that youâve carefully completed your online profile. By filling out each section youâre maximising your chances of showing up in search results. Donât just talk about what youâve doneâ¦reveal where you want to be! E.g. If youâre interested in moving into a specific industry or sector mention it on your profile and be as specific as you can (without closing doors for yourself): âLooking for marketing/sales, product development roles for SMEs fast growing enterprises within Tech/Media sectorâ Things to avoid: Vague un-inspiring statements expressing only the benefits for you and not the recruiter: âmy aim is now to find a role in the corporate world suitable for building on my skills and experienceâ There are hundreds of platforms, networks forums where you can create a profile. Perhaps choose 3 or 4 to host your profile to start with. Choose 1 large professional networking website, choose 2 niche forums or networks relevant to you and 1 other âpersonal outletâ (e.g. a blog or twitter profile). All social profiles should be kept private. 2) Get networked: Do you know the names of the hiring manager, recruiter, HR team at your dream company? You can easily find their professional profiles on professional networking sites. Do a quick people search and send them an introductory message to get connected. You can see which networks theyâre in, and other profiles theyâre connected withâ¦and if theyâve got any status updates or comments announcing what type of candidates theyâre looking to recruit! All of these things will help you when writing a cover letter or prospective email. Also, it helps put your profile right under their nosesâ¦and if youâre profile is good enough maybe theyâll just invite you for an interview! Further reading at How To Build a Brilliant Professional Network in College. 3) Get creative: Obviously this comes more naturally to some, but being creative can poll-vault your average application right onto the laps of a recruiter. Thereâs the guy who created a website dedicated to asking âGoogle please hire meâ, or the girl one who personally delivered a beautiful hand-made parcel containing their resume right to the desk of the CEO of a multi-national. Both worked but only because both were relevant, well planned executed effectively. But things can get carried away â" heat sensitive resume paper that changes colour when touched⦠Seems a âtouchâ desperate perhaps? If you want to do something wacky gauge your market carefully, perhaps try to find others already working within that company or industry and check their reactions to your plan, then make sure you implement it perfectly. 4) Get in-demand: When hiring someone it always is a plus point if theyâre âin-demandâ â" do they have other interviews or job offers on the table? The best people always doâ¦so make sure that youâre courting a number of dream companies instead of just targeting one! Aim for your dream company (of course) but also consider their major industry competitors. You could âfollowâ all the company profiles and take an active interest in industry news. When you score an interview make sure the interviewer knows youâre being shortlisted or offered roles with their competitors â" itâll make you irresistible!
